The Nintendo World Championship Qualifer (Plus an Update)

It has been pretty quiet around here for quite a while (life has a tendency to demand all of your time,) but I wanted to put it out there that the engines are up and running again and we have some new things coming!  A new stream event is entering the final planning stages, as well as another project that is on its way, so be on the look out for that.

I figured I would also take the opportunity to talk a bit about the Nintendo World Championship.

Image: Nintendo
First and foremost, I didn't win, but it was a good time.  I met a lot of great people, including participants and the Nintendo team, and had the chance to play Metroid: Samus Returns and Super Mario Odyssey between the 20 billion rounds of Mario Kart 7 I played over 2 days.

The aforementioned "great people."
I won't go into great detail about either game, since there are reviews aplenty for both by writers much more talented than I, but to confirm: they are just as great as everyone says and you should buy them both.  Metroid: Samus Returns releases on 3DS on September 15th and Super Mario Odyssey launches on the Switch on October 27th.  Seriously, super good.

Watch as this unsuspecting nerd develops carpel tunnel.
Anyway, overall I came in 3rd.  I was pretty happy with my time though, it was pretty much on par with what I was able to hit in practice runs:

Gaaaaaaaah!! So close!

I held onto first for the better part of the last day, but alas, it slipped away as the more skilled players arrived.

I'm not bitter, you're bitter!!

I did come away with some pretty awesome posters and an unyielding and immense hatred for Bowser's Castle 1 in Mario Kart 7.  I am not exaggerating when I say I likely played that course 5000 times.  Mario Kart 7 is a great game, but let it be known that I have not ever played another level in that game, picked it up for the first time when the Championships were announced, and it is incredibly likely that I will never pick it up again.

Be jealous.
I also have to give a shout out to Annie.  She was the one who demanded we go to Minneapolis for the qualifier, patiently sat next to me while I practiced every spare second I had, listened to me babble on about strats and lap times, and held an umbrella over me to block the sun while I practiced in line at the qualifier.  You would have seen her there running around to get water, hold my stuff, grab energy drinks, and cheering me on the whole way.  She is awesome and I can't thank this beautiful lady enough.

So that's it for now.  Be on the lookout for a stream announcement in the VERY
near future!

Kirby's Streamland was a success!

On June 3rd, the Moblins landed on Popstar to take on the Kirby universe!  I must say, it was an absolute success!  Thanks to you guys, we were able to raise $1700 for the Epilepsy Foundation and SUDEP Institute!  Over the course of stream, we raffled off various prizes during the individual games, as well as a grand prize generously donated by our amazing friend and Moblin Chad Rohr: a New 3DS XL "Galaxy Style",+ two 3DS games: Kirby: Planet Robobot and Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Let me give a general recap for anyone who happened to miss our adventure:

Jason started us off with "Kirby's Adventure" on the NES Classic.  He had an effortless run completing the game at 100%!  During this game, we raffled off a book titled "100 Things to Draw With a Circle: Start with a shape, doodle what you see. (100 Shapes, 100 Doodles)", donated to us by its author, Sarah Walsh. (♪♪ First you draw a circle, and then you dot the eyes...eh, eh, get it?)  Sarah is a VERY talented artist and generally awesome person, so you should definitely check out her work on her website.

The next game was "Kirby Super Star", which was played by Corey and Leslie, Matthew's siblings. The sibling rivalry was (and is) very real, signified by the banter between them.  They went through all the larger games (from Spring Breeze to Milky Way Wishes), as well as the mini-games, where we all decided that Jason and Annie cheat at Samurai Kirby (as seen below).  Leslie also nearly sent Denny back to the nether realm when she destroyed his joke about RuneScape and pickled instruments. #VlassicGaming. During this game, the Moblins raffled off an adorable Sword Kirby plush.

Then the stream fell into a hilarious turmoil with the four player game, "Kirby's Return to Dreamland".  We raffled off two prizes this time, a homemade Kirby plush (this thing is the size of a basketball, it's awesome) and a beautiful print by Mel Matthews.  You should definitely check out her Etsy Shop, there is some really great stuff over there. Logan and Denny created prog songs for their wedding while Corey and Leslie attempted to actually play the damn game.

At 9:30, to take us into the overnight hours of the stream, we paused "Kirby's Return to Dreamland" so Jason could read a bedtime story from "Brawl in the Family."  You can watch that here.

"Kirby and the Rainbow Curse" started at about 1 AM CST and if you ask Sam, Luke, and Annie, it was a curse that lasted for about 150 years.  If you get the chance to go back and watch some of the gameplay, it's certainly worth it.  Sam rolled Kirbo along the rope with Luke and Annie offering support (both in-game and emotionally).  You can see a small sample of it here #DamnYouKirbo. This calamity lasted until Jason woke up to save the day (well, very early morning).  During this game, we raffled off another one of Mel's prints and a small pouch of "Rainbow Curse" colored pencils!

Once the Rainbow Curse was lifted, Jason and Logan went on "Kirby's Air Ride."  After some initial audio issues (way to go, Corey), they were flying through some city trials.

After a bit of a late start, Logan began "Fever Dream: The Game"....I mean "Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards". With Jason as co-pilot, he managed to gather all the shards and took down the Dark Star, beating the game at 100%!  During this game, we raffled off a plushy that was handmade by Jason's wife Nicky, as well as a Waddle Dee amiibo!

It was then time for the "Maxim Tomato Frenzy"... poor, poor Denny.

After stewing in the tomatoey goodness, Denjamin finally got all of the tomato goop out of his ears... and hair... and nether regions... and got started on the final game. Denald's brother David joined him in the tangled up mess also known as "Kirby's Epic Yarn".  We watched the two brothers "unravel" as they hilariously "knit"-picked at each other (ha, sewing puns) when one of them would screw up. Ultimately, they managed to "stitch" their relationship back together (okay, I'm done) to defeat Yin-Yarn and bring Kirby's Streamland to a close.  The raffle this time around was for a one-of-a-kind Kirby cross stitch from Brandi Sahlfeld (check out her Instagram here), as well as a copy of Kirby's Epic Yarn!

So that about does it.  Again, thank you to everyone who donated and watched our livestream!  Every cent goes to help those with epilepsy and to spread the word about epilepsy related illnesses.  Stay tuned for more livestreams and videos from the Moblins.  Until next time...

Kirby's Streamland: The Games

First you draw a circle,
then you dot the eyes
add a great big smile
and presto, it's Kirby!

Everyone's favorite little pink Nintendo star is here and ready for a marathon on June 3rd, starting at 10 AM CST! New to the Kirby fandom? A diehard fan since 1993? Read on to find out more about the games the Moblins are playing and even learn some fun facts too!

Image result for kirby's adventure

Kirby's Adventure

1993 - NES, Nintendo 3DS

Moblin Playing: Jason

This game is Kirby's first home console appearance! King Dedede stole the Star Rod from the Fountain of Dreams causing all the inhabitants of Dream Land to have dreamless naps. As the happy dreams disappear, a menacing force begins to emanate from the Fountain of Dreams and Nightmare is unleashed! In this epic adventure, you play as Kirby traveling through seven words and battling a variety of enemies and bosses in an effort to win back the Star Rod! Can we find a way to reconcile with King Dedede and defeat Nightmare?

Fun Facts: Kirby's Adventure is the only Kirby game on NES. It's also the first game where MetaKnight (Annie's favorite character) makes an appearance. Kirby's Adventure is the first Kirby game to incorporate a key Kirby feature - the ability to copy abilities by eating enemies! Yikes, that sounds a lot more horrifying when you type it out... You are what you eat I guess.

Kirby's Dream Course

1994 - SNES

Moblin Playing: Jason + someone else because the hate that ensues is half the fun

Kirby's Dream Course has been destroying relationships almost as long as Mario Kart! Honestly, we're not sure this game actually has a plot but the premise is you play golf in an intergalactic setting destroying enemies on mind-melting courses and falling asleep until you eat enough Kirby food to earn a turn back. It's infuriating, addictive, and way more difficult than you'd think. Basically it has all the components to make it an instant classic.

Fun fact: I mean, the game is essentially Kirby golf on acid. Is that not unique enough for the game itself to be the fun fact?

Image result for kirby's super star

Kirby Super Star

1996 - SNES

Moblins Playing: Corey + Leslie

Eight little games, one big fun Kirby adventure! Kirby Super Star consists of Spring Breeze, Dyna Blade, Gourmet Race, The Great Cave Offensive (Corey's favorite), Revenge of Meta Knight, Milky Way Wishes, Samurai Kirby, and Megaton Punch. Each game has it's own independent plot from taking on King Dedede after he steals food from the citizens of Dream Land in Spring Breeze to exploring a cave system to collect 60 treasures in The Great Cave Offensive

Fun fact: Spring Breeze is actually a more simple remake of the original Kirby's Dream Land!

Image result for kirby 64 the crystal shards

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

2000 - Nintendo 64

Moblin Playing: Logan

What's worse than enemies like King Dedede and mind-melting golf courses? Dark Matter. On a fairy-populated planet called Ripple Star, a malicious force is taking over. In an effort to save the planet's sacred treasure, the Great Crystal, a little fairy named Ribbon flees the planet with the Crystal in tow. During her escape, Dark Matter catches up to Ribbon and shatters the Great Crystal into pieces across the galaxy. Ribbon lands on planet Pop Star and finds the one and only Kirby to join her in her quest! Can Ribbon and Kirby find all the Great Crystal shards and save the planet of Ripple Star? Will they be heralded as heroes on their home planets or end up lost among the stars? Only one way to find out (and that's by watching the stream, definitely not by playing it yourself)!

Fun fact: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards was the only Kirby game made for the Nintendo 64 although Kirby does appear in Super Smash Bros. as a playable character!

Karbox.jpg

Kirby Air Ride

2003 - GameCube

Moblins Playing: Jason + up to 3 other Moblins

Mario Kart but with Kirby. That's it.

Fun fact: Kirby Air Ride was the first GameCube game that could LAN play and connect up to 4 GameCube consoles.

Kirby's Epic Yarn

Kirby's Epic Yarn

2010 - Wii

Moblin Playing: Denny

Kirby's Epic Yarn is possibly the most darling game ever created. When you pull the threads of this game apart, what's left is an epic adventure filled with impossibly cute enemies, clever cloth scenery, and crafty new powers. Kirby's Epic Yarn has the ability to unravel any bad mood and leave you in stitches.

Fun fact: Kirby's Epic Yarn originally was supposed to be a one-off game that wasn't in the Kirby franchise at all! Near completion, they reworked the game as a Kirby game because it just seemed meant to be.

Kirbys return to dreamland boxart.jpg

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

2011 - Wii

Moblins Playing: Corey, Jason, Denny + Annie

The Lor Starcutter has crash-landed on Pop Star and the alien pilot within it, Magolor, needs Kirby's help! With his spaceship scattered to pieces across the planet, Kirby and friends join Magolor solving puzzles, evading enemies, and gathering pieces to rebuild the Lor Starcutter ship. Surely helping a random, shipwrecked alien that no one knows can only go well and not result in any issues whatsoever...

Fun fact: Kirby's Return to Dream Land was originally slated to be released on the GameCube in 2005 but development was delayed and the game being shifted to the Wii console.

Kirby and the rainbow curse art.jpg

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

2015 - Wii U

Moblins Playing: Corey + Alex + Annie

When a giant portal opens up and steals all the color out of Dream Land, you know there's a problem. Enter Elline, a paintbrush fairly hailing from the land of Seventopia to save the day. Elline gives Kirby and his friends their color back and requests their help to restore order in both realms. Help Kirby roll down the path to success (literally, because he is stuck in clay ball form) and restore color to all of Pop Star!

Fun fact: Kirby and the Rainbow Curse is a follow up game to Kirby: Canvas Curse which came out in 2005 on the Nintendo DS. This was also the first Kirby game to use amiibos!
